Music
For as long as I remember, music has played an essential part of my life.
During the 60s I played the guitar in various local bands. Later in life my interest in music led me in other directions. For some years I worked at a music publishing company, succeeded by a job as branch manager in a record store.
Denmarks Radio– the first years
In 1974 Denmarks Radio established a local department in city of Aarhus. I was among the first to audition, which led to free lance jobs as a dj doing nigh-time broadcasts.
The following year I began hosting broadcasts weekly, including a half hour series focusing on the history of pop music. 1975 also included “The Saturday Night Club”. A series of broadcasts, featuring bands and singers, including a live audience in the studio.
During the following months still more broadcasts were added and consequently I quit my job as a branch manager in the retail business. On 1st October 1977, I became staff member at Denmarks Radio.
In the late 70s I cooperated with various colleges on a variety of broadcasts. In 1977 a new series of broadcasts was launched, called “The Rhythm Journal”. A one hour broadcast reflecting the activities within rock, pop, folk and jazz in the province. “The Rhythm Journal” was on the air weekly for 10 years.
On January 1st 1988, Denmarks Radio re-established the weekly pop chart “TOP 20”. A 2-hour broadcast which listed the best selling records in Denmark. I hosted that for more than 5 years.
Denmarks Radio – the ‘90’ies and onwards
After the TOP 20 ended I moved from DR’s Program 3 to Program 4, doing various live broadcasts from coast to coast. In September 1996 I became presenter of the weekly “Danish Chart”. And since 2001 I have also been hosting “P4Evening”, airing 7 days a week from 7 pm ‘till 1 o’clock in the morning.
Over the years I have been doing hundreds of interviews, resulting in countless portrait broadcasts. The list of interviews include: Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Olivia Newton-John, Phil Collins, Elton John, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Luther Vandross, Les Paul, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Zucchero, Julio Iglesias, Tom Jones, Ibrahim Ferrer, Nena, Laura Pausini, Herb Alpert, Earth, Wind & Fire, Toto, Duran Duran, Erasure, Cliff Richard, Kim Wilde, Chet Atkins, Dionne Warwick. The Beach Boys, George Benson, Omara Portuondo, Frank Zappa, Chris Rea, Barry White, Dolly Parton, Billy Joel – and many more.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Simultaneously with my work at Denmarks Radio, my camera, since the mid 70’ies has played an important role. The alternation between the auditory and the visual media mutually has strengthened my insight and understanding for the essential in both worlds. First and foremost I have specialized in architecture, design and interiors. My work has been published in magazines and books in Denmark and internationally as well.
CUBA
A country which appeals to the eye as well as to the ear – in fact to all senses. The Wim Wenders film “Buena Vista Social Club” managed to bring back to our consciousness, this more or less forgotten country. Therefore, when I first visited Havana in January 2001, both camera and microphone were in my suitcase.
The visit turned out to be much more rewarding than expected: culturally, historically and socially. Two weeks were far from adequate to obtain a thorough impression of this (hopefully) last socialist regime in the world. The contacts I established required another visit, so I returned to Cuba just four months later.
Since then I have visited Cuba regularly, including Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Pinar del Rio and Viñales.
USA
In 1990 and ’91 I visited Los Angeles. With the camera it was my aim to reflect the city’s architecture from a historical point of view. The result was a series of articles plus a slide lecture which originated in the first missions and Spanish tradition from the 1790s and culminated in the buildings by trend settings architects like Frank Gehry, Eric Owen Moss and Edward Niles.
In 1998 + ’99 I returned to California. This time I concentrated my photography upon a series of chosen architects in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. The intention was not only to photograph architecture, but also to get an impression of how architects decorate their private residences and which ideology dominates their expression of form.
In the spring of 2000 I went to New York. With the camera I wanted to capture this pulsating, hectic and colorful city, solely by means of black/white image.
CIRCUS
In year 2000 an old dream came true. For the first time, equipped with my camera, I finally got the opportunity to get close to the world of circus: a magical universe, which for centuries has thrilled and bewitched an audience of all ages. I got close to the artists and the clowns, so close that I ended up with a series of portraits. Not just for one season – but year after year.
